Well …… the time is almost upon us. Events in South Africa have been put firmly to the back of our minds and the serious business of the Premier League can now take centre stage.

On 5th May Peter Crouch headed us to a 1-0 win over Roberto Mancini’s side at Eastlands ….. and a season double over our Manchester rivals.

Same Again Please !!! - Crouch Breaks City Hearts

Now, in just a couple of days time, City visit the Lane equipped with new signings Yaya Toure, David Silva, Jerome Boateng and Aleksandar Kolarov ….. a side with £75m of improvements since our last meeting ….. and counting !

With only Sandro in for us so far and the Brazilian unable to make an appearance for Harry Redknapp’s side until his current commitments have been fulfilled, the Spurs line up should have a familiar look with Gio Dos Santos the only player looking ready to gate crash our first XI.

Gareth Bale should make the line-up for Spurs after shaking off the knock that forced him to miss out Wales’ midweek match with Luxembourg.

Roman Pavlyuchenko is still suffering with a hamstring injury and looks likely to miss out.

Jonathan Woodgate is still nowhere near a first-team return.

Well, they may have spent big but, Villareal aside, Harrys boys have had a decent pre-season so the City clash should not be striking fear into our boys on the opening day!

With confidence high following our Champions League qualification last time out … at the expense of City, you’d like to think that we could repeat our opening result against Liverpool from last season.

Harry Redknapp has given his first major indication that Giovani Dos Santos could be set to stay at the club and take up a starring role ….. but only if his new found attitude sticks!!!

After an impressive showing for his native Mexico at this summers World Cup in South Africa, there has been no shortage of interest in the talented forward, with recent friendly opponents Fiorentina the latest club to have supposedly enquired about his availability on a season long loan deal.

Time To Step Up !!! - Gio

In the 2 years since his arrival from Spanish giants Barcelona, Gio has had loan spells at both Ipswich Town and, last season, Turkish club Galatasaray.

When questioned yesterday on the prospects of Gio staying and proving himself in the Lillywhite shirt, boss Redknapp said :
“Giovani has got outstanding ability and we’ve got a good prospect for the future,” he said. “He has got to dedicate himself and show he can do it every week, but he is knuckling down.”

I think most supporters will let out a huge sigh of relief upon hearing this latest quote from Harry. With the lack of new signings this summer so far, the emergence of Dos Santos will be viewed by many to be as good as a new signing! Given the chance and a decent run in the first XI, we can hopefully see the Gio that the rest of the world was so impressed with this summer!

SPURS 3-2 FIORENTINA : Pre Season Result …..

For those of you who didn’t manage to catch the game live, I’ve managed to find a few decent videos of todays goals from our 3-2 victory over Italian side Fiorentina in our final major pre-season match before next weekends big kick-off.

After going 1 down early on, Gio capitalised on a defensive error in the Italian back line before squaring to Roman Pavlyuchenko to tap home the first equaliser of the game.

Our opponents then took advantage of some sloppy defending on our part to go in at half time 2-1 up when Adem Ljajic volleyed home from 12 yards, but the second half belonged to Spurs with Robbie Keane finding the back of the net from a Tom Huddlestone through ball to notch up his first of the afternoon.

With 89 minutes on the clock and a draw the likely result, Keane ensured the victory with a well taken third, his second of the match. Substitute Jake Livermore finding the Irishman with a great through ball ….. the finish almost identical to his first.

1-0 Fiorentina

1-1 Pavlyuchenko

2-1 Fiorentina

2-2 Keane

3-2 Keane Winner !!!

Not sure how much truth there is in this one, but it’s interesting, so I thought I’d bring you it anyway and see what you think …..

According to a few different sources today AC Milan are attempting to broker a deal with Daniel Levy, which would see Giovani Dos Santos move to the San Siro and Klaas Jan Huntelaar make the opposite switch.

Destination Milan ?

Milan have now accepted that the £14m which they paid for the dutch striker is no longer a reflection of his current market value and are prepared to offload the former Ajax and Real Madrid man for a reduced fee.

Huntelaar has struggled for form since leaving Holland, scoring only seven goals in 21 appearances since his most recent switch to Milan and AC chief executive Adriano Galliani himself said that Huntelaar is set to leave, probably for the Premier League.

The Italians are hopeful of signing Dos Santos after the Mexican forward impressed during his country’s World Cup campaign.

Harry Target ? Huntelaar

Despite his exploits during the tournament, the exciting forward is not in Redknapp’s plans at White Hart Lane and he is keen to offload the player who has struggled to make the first team squad on a regular basis since his arrival from Barcelona.

If these reports do turn out to contain any element of truth, I think I’d have mixed feelings on this one. Sure, Huntelaar would be good business at a fee lower than the £14m Milan paid for him and I’m sure he’d be able to do a job for us, especially with his Champions League experience. Dos Santos however, is a player I would love to see given a real crack at the Premier League next season. After a great World Cup for Mexico his confidence must be sky high and his performance against Villareal the other night in our friendly (bags of energy, drive and enthusiasm when he came on!) suggests he’s ready to knuckle down and fight for his place.

Given a choice I’d like both, but if I had to choose between the 2 …….

I’d rather keep Gio !!!

What do you think ???

Tonights match takes place at the home of the Portuguese giants , the Estadio Da Luz which holds approximately 65,000 so if anywhere near capacity should provide a great atmosphere !

The lads warmed up by splitting into two teams within which they had to run half the length of the pitch keeping the ball up among themselves. Ten press-ups was the punishment for the losing team.

They then moved onto possession drills before finishing up with a crossing and shooting drill before returning to the team hotel for downtime ahead of the game

Kick off is scheduled for 7:45pm.

On the 2nd January 2007 Spurs announced the signing of what they believed to be a star in the making ……. The ‘New Zidane’ no less !!!

Rangers Bound - Adel Off To QPR

After just 9 first team outings and no goals in competitive matches Adel Taarabt looks set to move back to Queens Park Rangers ….. this time on a permanent deal.

The Moroccan international ,21, who moved to the Lane from French club Lens in 2007 (initially on loan) struggled to break into the first team under both Martin Jol and Harry Redknapp and appears to be ready to make the move to gain regular first team football.

“The big mistake was to sign for Tottenham and not go to another club when I first came over” – Not words to get the Spurs faithful on side and chanting his name – Taarabt proceeded to spurt yet more ill advised comments when he told reporters only a couple of months ago – “I hope to be playing for one of the top four in Spain next season — Real Madrid ,Barcelona, Valencia or Sevilla. I have contact with good teams and I know that they want me. Now I just have to hope they can agree a deal with Tottenham.”

Well, unfortunately the big 4 in La Liga forgot to bid and Adel now looks set to put the finishing touches on a £1m move back to the club at which he spent last season on loan.

So, with another one off through the White Hart Lane exit door, are you glad or disappointed to see the back of Taarabt? The kid undoubtedly has ability, but failed to find one specific position in which to ply his talents. His debut in the match against West Ham showed a glimpse of what he could do and at the time we were all desperate to see more of him but in the end the few appearances that followed left us with that disappointed feeling and most will probably not be too bothered to see him leave.

Any comments as usual in the box below …..

A few sources are today throwing around the talk of a possible deal to bring Villa wide man Ashley Young to the Lane …..

Great !!! …… I hear you say,

Part Of The Deal ? - Bents and JJ

But what about the cost ?

With Young apparently valued by the Villa board at £30m – yes, you read that right £30m, Harry Redknapp is reportedly preparing to offer 3 players in exchange for the England hopeful’s services.

Jermaine Jenas, Robbie Keane and David Bentley are the players in question, some may be happy to see the back of all 3 at the moment, and we’d be lucky to get £20m  for them individually in the current financial climate, but the question is ……. Is Ashley Young of equivalent value to all 3 put together?

I personally would love to see Young in a Spurs shirt come August 14th, lining up against Man City for the opening Prem fixture, but my opinion is that he’s worth nearer the £15-20m mark ?.?.?

Jenas, Keane and Bentley are all good players in their own rights and to be honest, I’d like to see Bentley given more time at the club. But if Harry were to strike a deal involving Keane and Jenas then I’d be happy ….. both players have probably done their best work in the lilywhite shirt and could probably do with a fresh start elsewhere to prevent their careers from petering out.

If the rumours turn out to have an ounce of truth in them ….. would you welcome this particular deal?

Would you like to see Ashley Young in a Spurs shirt ? Would you be glad to see the back of the 3 Spurs men in question or would you like to see any / all 3 retained?

Let us know in the comments box below …….

Front man and full back on way out of the White Hart Lane door?

Reports in the press last week suggesting that new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson was planning a swoop for Spurs striker Peter Crouch have gathered pace today. Now speculation has arisen that any bid could be twinned with another deal to try to take Cameroon left back Benoit Assou Ekotto to Anfield aswell!

Crouch In The Red Again Next Season ?

Hodgson Target - Ekotto ?

After announcing that star striker Fernando Torres had committed his future to the Merseyside club, Hodgson has now set about pairing the former Athletico Madrid front man with a new strike partner and has set his sights on Spurs’ former Liverpool man Crouch.

With Harry Redknapp publicly searching for a new front man and Roman Pavlyuchenko seemingly ready to stay put and fight for his place next season, Crouch’s chances of a regular start seem to be deteriorating by the second. Crouch could therefore quite conceivably see a move back to his former club in a favourable light considering his prospects at the Lane going into the new campaign.

Ekotto is a stranger story, however this rumour seems to be gathering momentum on a daily basis and now appears to have some substance. Unhappy with his current options at left back, Hodgson now seems ready to move for the Spurs man to add some balance to his Liverpool side, and sees B.A.E as the perfect option to play in behind prospective signing Royston Drenthe.

Can you see either move coming off? Would you be upset to see either player leave the Lane at this time? Let us know in the comments box below …..

Writing’s on the wall as Woody fails to make cut of 25 …..

End Of The Line - Woodgate Set To Retire ?

The knee injury which has sidelined Jonathon Woodgate since November last year looks set to result in the end of the former England man’s career.

After Harry Redknapp said last week that July was a “make or break” month for his injury prone centre half, he now appears set to omit Woody from his squad of 25 players to be handed to the Premier League by 1st September.

Once that deadline has passed, Woodgate would not be eligible for squad registration for league matches again until the transfer window reopens in January.

He was back running again at the start of pre season training and there looked to be hope, but he has spent most sessions working away from the rest of the squad and Redknapp said last night: “Jonathan will not be fit for the start of the season. “He’s in a position where he can’t train or kick a ball.”

With Champions League football on the way, Redknapp will want a squad of players who he considers fit and reliable and unfortunately he will not see Woodgate in that bracket.

Won't Happen - Milner & Young

With no sign of a return in the near future, you would expect an announcement from the club or player in the coming weeks.

Whatever he decides, I’m sure all supporters will wish him well.

Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp has distanced himself from reports linking the club with a bid for Manchester City target James Milner.

Redknapp was thought to be monitoring City’s progress with the player but when asked by Sky Sports News, he said :

“No, we wouldn’t be able to.

“Anybody would like James Milner, he’s an outstanding young player, but he’d be way out of our depth.”

Redknapp was also linked with Milner’s Villa teammate Ashley Young at the weekend but quashed that speculation  aswell by saying :

“Again, I wouldn’t think they’d want to sell Ashley Young.

“He is a good player but he belongs to Villa. We’ve not made any enquiries for him at all.”

For anybody who didn’t get to see the action live, here are some brief highlights of our match against Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon this evening.

Robbie Keane scored the opener and then turned provider for Jonathon Obika to level the scores at 2 a piece in the final match of our U.S tour.

Keane scored, latching onto a Niko Kranjcar pass before slotting past the keeper into the bottom left corner, in the 23rd minute. Only 2 minutes later though, Sporting were level, Matias Fernandez heading home the equaliser.

Jaime Valdes made it 2-1 to the Portuguese side just after the restart by firing past David Button, who had replaced Carlo Cudicini at the break.

Substitute Jonathan Obika fired a shot through goalkeeper Rui Patricio in the 70th minute from Keane’s pass to get the Spurs back on terms, but neither team could force a winner in the remaining 20 minutes.

The 2-2 draw was enough to give Sporting victory in the Barclays NY Challenge on goal difference following their clean sheet victory over Man City in midweek.
