The Spurs managed a strong end to the group stages of their Europa league campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over Anzhi Makhachkala. The win was never seriously in question and Tottenham dominated from start to end. They were attacking and inventive in play making even while having rested 7 players from their last assignment.
Soldado who has himself admitted that he needs to score more goals from open play for Tottenham scored his first hat trick for the club and irrespective of the quality of opposition, it is sure to give him much needed confidence ahead of the game against Liverpool. He scored twice in the first half before getting his hat trick with a penalty in the second half.
I’m extremely happy for him,” Villas-Boas said. “He’s been waiting for a moment like this and it finally happened tonight with a hat-trick. It will be a major boost for a player who has been very professional and deserves respect.”
“As a striker, you have to persist and persist; finishing off the situations you are given and that final touch hasn’t been there for him recently. It will be a great boost of confidence for him.”
Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen returning from injury added a bit more relevance to this game. Rose started and Eriksen too got in a decent amount of playing time. Rose in particular has been missed with the balance on the left suffering in his absence. Erik Lamela too had a great game providing a lovely ball to Soldado which he converted for his second goal.
The team has been unbeaten since the 6-0 against City and would look to continue that form heading into the game against Liverpool.
