Defeat to Arsenal last week has made us start to look over our shoulder for the first time since Christmas (and the football betting tips for us finishing in third place are getting shorter). A defeat to Man United at the weekend could leave the chasing pack just 4 pts behind us and with Chelsea away coming up in a few weeks the players nerves are going to be put to the sword.
There is an old cliché that experience matters and in football that is quite often the case. Our players are halfway there in gaining experience, they saw off City 2 years ago for 4th place and gained some valuable experience in the Champions League but has that winning mentality and belief been installed in them permanently? Do the players believe they are capable of winning things?
If you look at our Tottenham team on paper then I think we are without doubt the 3rd best team in the league but Arsenal and Chelsea have been doing it for years which may give them a psychological edge over us.
Can our players keep their bottle to see off the others, once United and Chelsea are out the way we don’t have to play any of the top 6 again but we have some tricky away games like Everton and Sunderland where we could easily drop points. Our eyes need to remain on the ball, poor performances away from home due to poor preparation or complacency will cost us points.
We are in the driving seat and there’s no doubt Arsenal and Chelsea will drop points but if we lose a couple now and let them get to within 1 point of us then we could fall apart, for example, once Arsenal got it back to 2-2 last week the players lost belief and the belief was firmly with the Arsenal players, the league is the same. If we give the other teams a sniff then we could pay the price.
There’s no doubt we are still in a great position but can our players keep their bottle and see out the season and also pick up some big wins?
