Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker will miss the opening Champions League game against Tottenham next week after picking up an injury. The defender picked up a facial injury after an elbow to the face during Germany’s Euro 2012 qualifying game.
Mertesacker was taken to hospital where a scan revealed a fracture below the eye, this has meant that the German defender will miss around 4 to 6 weeks of football and crucially the Champions League match against Tottenham on Tuesday.
I don’t like to see players get injured but this is a massive blow for Bremen, he is their star defender and played for Germany at the world cup, this will weaken them considerably and give us more chance of breaking through their defence. We took a similar blow when Dawson was injured last week and now the German side face the same problem, I don’t know if they have as much quality to cover at the back like we do. With the addition of Van der Vaart to the side and the experience he brings I have every confidence that the boys can go out there next week and get some kind of result.
