Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has set his sights on a cut price move for Manchester City’s Craig Bellamy after seeing Joe Cole apparently lured to Liverpool by the Anfield club’s £90,000 a week offer.

The Price Is Right - Redknapp Back In For Craig

Following countless weeks of speculation, former Chelsea star Joe Cole has finally put the longest running transfer saga of the summer to bed ….. with Liverpool his chosen destination.

According to reports Cole, 29 has accepted the bumper £90k a week offer put to him by new reds boss Roy Hodgson and will link up with England team mates Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Glen Johnson at Anfield for the start of the new season.

Following Cole’s reported decision, Harry Redknapp has quickly moved to secure the signature of City star Bellamy.

The much travelled, much maligned striker is set to become Redknapp’s second major squad addition of the summer after the capture of Brazilian midfielder Sandro from Internacional.

Transfer fees being reported are between £3m – £5m and if Spurs chief Daniel Levy could get that down towards the lower end of the scale then it would appear to represent good business for the club when you take into account the probable departure of Robbie Keane.

Meanwhile, comments attributed to Redknapp yesterday suggest that Croation stopper Stipe Pletikosa is on his way to the Lane as competition for Gomes and Cudicini. The 31 year old Spartak Moscow star was close to joining the club last year before a knee injury scuppered plans at that time. Redknapp now appears to be convinced that his injury is behind him and said :

“I might be taking another goalkeeper from Croatia … Pletikosa.

“There is every chance I might be getting him so that’s good.”

Disappointed not to see the Cole deal come off? Would you welcome Craig Bellamy to the Lane or do you think he’d have an unsettling effect on the squad? Who else would you like to see brought in before the window slams shut?

  1. 3 Mil for bellamy will do me nicely , shame about cole but hes not that important

  2. I hope Joe has looked into Liverpool’s coffers because Pompy also paid great wages and look what happened to them Mr Campbell will tell you how it hurts when you are owed money. He will also have to spend loads of money on security because most of the players from both Everton and Liverskint get robbed like Keane and Duncan Ferguson did . Ha for Bellend i don’t like him but the though of him and Bale marauding down our left side his appealing but so is Townsend but Bellamy is at the op of his game and Towsend is just starting his.

  3. Interesting points DAVSPURS and who exactly was the manager that got all those players in on those wages!!

  4. Bellamy is on about 90k a week at City, so he’s unlikely to accept any less to join us. Bellamy for (an admittedly very cheap) £3m – £5m + 90k a week, or Cole for free + 90k a week? I think the scousers may have got one over us there. Shame, I thought Cole was in the bag. Maybe Liverpool are getting taken over soon?

difference between pompey and liverpool is, liverpool are a massive club and always will be, they have a global fan base only behind united and madrid in terms of supporters and revenue, thus they will never disappear. Good choice by cole choosing a club with pedigree over a club who aren’t even in the champions league until they win qualifier

  6. Don’t believe we need Joe Cole and if he wants to join a club for the money then good riddance.
Always had a feeling we would get Bellamy after he shook Harry’s hand at the game that got us CL last season.
I would love to see Huntelaar at the lane and Jimmy Bullard 3m (Spurs fan and good for a joke).
Be good to see some young lads coming through the youth set up, all these highly paid mercenaries from overseas that aren’t going to die for the club. What modern player today can hold a candle to Dave Mackay?

  7. SLIPPYRIC – Watch out for Andros Townsend coming through this season, he looks a real talent. I’m sure there are a few others knocking on the door aswell, Harry’s taken a few young players to the States with him for the tour so we’ll see!

He said he would welcome a move to London if a deal with Boca couldnt be brokered, The Joe Cole deal has collapsed (which is a shame and a real blow to Harry) this guy is the classy player I can remember seeing ever and is on a FREE!!!

  9. oh sorry we are going for a cheap nutjob like bellamy instead!! That Champions league qualification has really brought us to the table in terms of transfers!

  10. I’ll be gutted if Bellendamy leaves us. Fair play to yous if you get him.

  11. Coxie mate,

First off – well done on this site, its really taking off!! Good work!!

And in regards to Bellamy, i personally would love him at the club.. Fair enough he has had problems in the past.. but i feel he would be a superb addition… Last year he was great for City, appearing to carry them at times!

His pace is such an outstanding attribute, and i was impressed by the work rate and effort he put in to every game, tackling back and being a team player.. Not to mention coming up with some great goals ,the two in the mank derby stand out, especially the one where he ‘murked’ Rio…

Hopefully we can progress into the group stages of the CL and compete in four areas, and i feel players with his pace and ability will be much neeeded.. He can go through the middle of out wide, and can only add quality to our side…

If Keane goes, which i think he will, and we dont go for Eidur again, Bellamy would be a great player to mix up our foward line..

Also, he became a hero in my eyes the way he celebrated our win at Eastlands, by congratulating the side, and Harry quite openly!!

Cant wait for the new season to start now!!

  12. The headline is misleading; if Joe Cole was only interested in the money, he would have moved to the Hammers, who have offered £100k per week.
Maybe he is after regular first 11 football, and thinks it is more likely at Liverpool.
Dont like to say it, but Liverpool getting rid of a 30 yr old high earner like Benayoun for £5.5m and replacing with a 28yr old Englishman on a free on only £20k more per week, sounds like a good bit of business for them.

  13. cheers ede mate, Joe Cole’s in it for the money and football, he picked liverpool because they offered more money than us or arsenal, he said a few weeks ago he wants a champions league club in london and then liverpool offer 90k a week and suddenly he joins, if that isn’t money motivated then what is. Surely the most logical move was Spurs with his ex manager and England teammates?

  14. Coxie,
Harry has just come out and said Joe Cole’s move to Liverpool was not for money, it was solely for football reasons.
It makes perfect sense for me. He is 28, has not been a regular starter for club or country for 5 years, and we have more strength in depth than Liverpool. It is his last big opportunity to make something out of his career, and he knows he cannot afford to waste it warming the bench, which may happen if he joined us. Good on the lad I say.
