Tottenham shot stopper Heurelho Gomes has tipped the club to go on a strong run in the Champions League this season. Spurs are well placed in their group on 4 points from 2 games but face two tough games away and at home to holders Inter Milan.

Gomes was interviewed by ‘Champions’ the official magazine of the Champions League and said:

“I am an optimist. When I joined Spurs, I said my goal was to win the Premier League. People laughed, but that’s how I am. If we make the knockout stages, anything could happen.”

The 29-year-old was also asked how the squad at Spurs compares to the one at PSV five years ago.

“It’s tricky to compare, but maybe you can point to the absence of superstars and the presence of young players willing to work their socks off. That PSV side, for example, had only Phillip Cocu as a famous name, but the other players showed that no team would walk over us. I see the same spirit at Spurs and hope we can emulate 2004-05. We have a group that is growing together at the same time and individuals who are making progress. Gareth Bale, for example, is coming along really well.”

Spurs are playing in their debut season in the Champions League and started with a 2-2 draw away to Werder Bremen followed by a 4-1 demolition of FC Twente at home. Next week will see the team travel to the San Siro to face champions Inter Milan and Gomes is full of confidence that Tottenham can pull off a shock.

Today we host Italian giants Fiorentina in our last friendly match before the start of the Premiership next saturday. It’s a 3pm kick off and I expect nothing less than a win. It looks like Defoe will not feature in today’s match due to claims by Harry he has suffered a groin strain, now whether this is true or whether Harry just wants to convince Capello that Defoe is injured so he doesn’t feature in midweek for England is another matter.

The Team will be pretty much like the Benfica game with a lot of changes made in the second half so most of the boys get a run out. Hopefully Harry gives a few of the youngsters a good run out again, the likes of Walker and Townsend have impressed so far. I would love to see Lennon have a decent game because I don’t think he has been the same player since returning from his injury last season and I would love to see another good performance from Gio, if he comes good this season it will be like a new signing for us.

The match is live in the Triffic Tottenham forum as always so if you haven’t signed up yet then do so >>HERE<<. Hopefully it will be a solid team performance and a good win at the end of it. Make no mistake about it, Fiorentina are no mugs and if we are not up for it then they could easily snatch a win. Not sure if this is live on the Bet365 site, some have been so if you want a better quality stream it might be worth clicking the Bet365 banner to the left and checking it out.

Last friendly and then it’s down to serious business with an opening day match agaisnt Manchester City and then the small matter of a Champions League qualifier to contend with, it should prove to be an interesting couple of weeks for us all.
