Apparently so, however you could be forgiven for thinking any different. Maybe it’s just England fans that feel like this because of our poor efforts so far but for me I just haven’t been able to get excited in any way about the World Cup yet, it doesn’t feel like World Cup time for me yet.

Let’s talk about last nights England v Algeria game (yes it really did happen), what the hell happend there?. Well I said in an earlier blog that Capello likes to play safe and picks his team based on experience over form, yesterday was a classic example by giving Carragher the nod over Dawson. For me he got it wrong when he put Gerrard on the left to bring back Gareth Barry, that is negative move number one because Gerrard is not a left midfielder and it showed. Negative move number two? well I would say it was picking Emile Heskey because Rooney wants to play with him up top. I wouldn’t have a problem with Heskey playing if he was either in form or if he was any good in the first place. The trouble with this scenario is that he is played to help Rooney out and when Rooney like last night has a nightmare game then there is nobody up front to score the goals. England actually looked more dangerous when Defoe came on but it was too little too late, this is the change that should have happend at half time because 0-0 at half time with Algeria is bad enough. Peter Crouch was given 6 minutes to change the game, please tell me, what is somebody supposed to do in 6 mins?.

I see Rob Green lost his place to David James and destroyed any confidence left that Green might have had, I wonder if he will drop Rooney,Gerrard,Lampard,Heskey next because Green lost his place for not doing his job so what is the difference?. I did laugh though when I saw the most pointless substituion I have ever seen in my life, when England wanted to change the game and really go for it we decided to swap a right winger for…………… another right winger!. Yes I was just as suprised as anyone that it wasn’t Joe Cole being brought on for Barry or Defoe for Heskey but it was Wright-Phillips who came on for Aaron Lennon. It’s almost like Capello has his untouchables and no matter how poor they are won’t ever get substituted. Could somebody please tell Capello that there are different formations he can try if 4-4-2 isn’t working out, it’s like he has been told if he breaks the 4-4-2 he will be shot.

I don’t really like to jump on the England bandwagon and I’m still as patriotic as anyone and really hope we get through but can we really defend the team so far?. I think some of the teams players are too big for their boots, they believe all the hype that they hear because they are some of the top Premiership players. The newspapers today are dominated by Rooney having a go at the fans for getting on the backs of the players, Rooney reckons the fans have no right to boo, I am sorry Wayne but when people have saved up all year and spent thousands of pounds to watch England play like that then they have every right to boo. I’m sure Rooney would want the fans to cheer if England lifted the World Cup, so he has to know that you take the rough with the smooth.

I hope that come Wednesday Capello doesn’t stick with what has failed him so far this tournament and has the guts to make a few changes. We are supposed to be England, one of the favourites, so why when we play the teams like USA, Algeria and next up Slovenia do we play negative tactics. We should go out there with the mentality of the Brazilians which is play to our strengths and not the oppositions. Why bring in a holding midfielder like Barry when we could play the likes of Joe Cole, and why play Heskey when we could play Defoe or Crouch. These teams are ranked way below us so we should take the game to them, whenever I see an England team sheet all I see is fear, fear of not wanting to get beat rather than a team that is set out to take the game to the opposition and go for the win. Where is the passion lads, are the days or passion players like Gascoigne in 1990 and Beckham in 2002 long gone? I thought Rooney would install some passion in the side but so far I couldn’t be more wrong.

Wednesday is make or break, if we don’t win we are going home, but for me it doesn’t feel like its even started yet. If England were to be flying home next week then i’m sure this could end up being the World Cup that people forgot. I take heart from the fact that in 2006,Italy didn’t set the tourament on fire with their football but ended up lifting the cup, yes I know its wishful thinking but England can’t keep on letting us down. One more point I would like to make is that the current squad of players are known as the golden generation, can someone explain to me why this is?. The golden generation, what on earth earns them that title? they have never got past a quater final of a major competition but somehow they get dubbed the gold generation, don’t make me laugh. This does just go to show that for all their faults the media really don’t help the players out.

Right now all I am thinking is if England are coming home next week who cares because Tottenham have a Champions League game coming up and I can bet my life they show more heart in that one match than England have and will in this World Cup.

Would love to hear whether you readers think i’m harsh or if you agree with some of my comments, remember as I said I am not agaisnt the England players and I support them more than anyone, but you can’t defend 2 performances like that and someone needs to give the players a wake up call. This is aWorld Cup and if you ask me, if we don’t get out of the group it will be worse than when we didn’t qualify for Euro 2008. I hope Wednesday is when the World Cup comes to life for us, and not the start of us trying to forget a shameful attempt. However if England score and the fans celebrate like mad I will think to myself “is this what it has come down to, having to celebrate like crazy because we score against like Slovenia”, when for me we should never have even been in this position. The thing is I am confident if we get out of the group stages then the boys would do us proud in later rounds untill we are inevitably knocked out, my only worry is I am not confident we will be getting out of the group. Slovenia will be harder to break down that the previous games because they know a result of any kind for them will be enough to send them through.

Would love to hear whether you readers think i’m harsh or if you agree with some of my comments, remember as I said I am not agaisnt the England players and I support them more than anyone, but you can’t defend 2 performances like that and someone needs to give the players a wake up call.

Right for all you guys unsure exactly how this Champions Lgeaue qualifying round works, I will try to explain it for you all to the best of my ability to give you a better idea of our chances.

Basically the qualifying rounds are split into 2 groups, the champions side and the non champions side of the qualifying rounds. Obviously Tottenham will be in the non champions side of the draw, but the teams in the half with the other champions of their domestic leagues are usually filled with teams from the smaller leagues which are usually entitled to only 1 Champions League place for their country anyway. The 15 teams who would be in the NON Champions Qualifying Round
based on current League position
4th Place in ENG, ESP, ITA
3rd Place in GER, FRA, RUS
2nd Place in UKR, NED, ROM , POR , TUR, GRE , SCO , BEL , SUI

There will be seedings and this will work in our favour, because we have had 2 Uefa Cup (Europa League) runs in the past few seasons we have ranked up points, Spurs are currently ranked 30th in Europe with a coefficient of 56.199. Anyway the seedings works based on the points, and how well other clubs from the same domestic leagues have performed in european competitions in recent seasons. With both of these taken into account we rank in the top 5 clubs in the qualifying round and will be seeded straight into the final qualifying round. The likes of Celtic will have to play in the 3rd qualifying round because they don’t get seeded. So the 3rd qualifying round will be made up of 10 teams in the non champions section, these are 5 teams which have gone through previous rounds and 5 more teams including celtic which have been seeded to come in at this stage. Whoever overcomes the 3rd qualifying round will then come through to the 4th and final qualifying round to face the top seeds (of which 1 will be us). The draw will see the top 5 seeds take on the teams from the 3rd qualifying round in a 2 leg match which will see the winners enter the Champions League proper. To clarify this in simple terms, we go straight into the 4th and final round of qualifying because English teams have a good record in Europe, and then we will be seeded in that round because we have ranked up our own points by our previous couple of seasons in the Uefa Cup.

15 Clubs who will be in the Non Champions Section of Qualifying
Spurs
Sevilla
Sampdoria
Werder Bremen
Auxerre

Zenit St Petesburg
Dinamo Kiev
Ajax
Unirea Urziceni (Still four teams could qualify in Romania)
Sporting Braga
Fenerbahce
PAOK Thessaloniki
Celtic
Gent
Young Boys

======================
The Five teams listed first will get a Bye to the 4th Qualifying Round
which will have 10 clubs

The 5 Teams Seeded for Round 3 Will be
Zenit St Petesburg
Ajax
Fenerbahce
Dinamo Kiev
Sporting Braga

The 5 Teams Seeded for Round 4 Should be
Sevilla
Werder Bremen
Zenit St Petesburg
Tottenham
Ajax

It’s funny because if Manchester City Or Aston Villa finished 4th this season they would have not been seeded because of their Uefa coefficient points would have not been enough. When the final qualifying round draw takes place we can expect to avoid Sevilla, Ajax, Weder Bremen, Zenit. We will face 1 of the teams who overcomes the 3rd qualifying round.

I hope this helps you all better understand how it works because it can be very confusing.

Can We Push On Next Season?

Next season will see spurs enter into the unknown, not only will we have to compete in 3 domestic competitions but will also have to juggle a Champions League campaign too. If we are being realistic, what can we hope to achieve next season?

Firstly the aim will no doubt be to finish in the top 4 again to keep the fans and players happy and to also balance the books. With the plans of a new stadium this is essential. Another aim will be to have a good run in the Champions League as this is our first time in Europe’s elite cup since its rebranding to the CL. I don’t think we will do a Leeds and reach the semi finals but I would consider it a good pop at it if we managed to get through the groups. But before all this we have the little matter of a qualifying game to overcome. If our league form is going well again next season I would suggest the Carling cup will be used for some of the youngsters to get a game, and why not? evey other top 4 club does it. As for the FA cup i’m sure Harry will do his best to win that.

Now our chances of having a good season next campaign will probably depends a lot on how we push on in the summer transfer window, who will come and who will go?. Well it’s nice for a change to be linked with some real big names and know there is a real possiblity of attracting these players now. One name that keeps popping up is Joe Cole on a Bosman and this would be a great addition. Harry should have sufficient funds to spend and can raise even more with the expected sales of Keane,O’hara,Dos Santos and Jenas which could raise over £20mil extra to add to the fund. So for all us Tottenham fans it promises to be an exciting summer. However we have already made the most significant signing of the transfer window by Modric extending his stay for a further 6 years.
So who knows what the 2010/11 season will hold, let’s just hope for once we can deliver and push on and finally live up the the expectations that we have never lived up to. Is this just a flash in the pan or are the sleeping giants finally awakening? I know one thing for certain, Arsenal are definately looking over their shoulder now.

Modric Staying Put!

Well it seems that Luka Modric will not be leaving, we know the big clubs want him but they can only offer him the same as us now which is champions league football.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has quashed talk that he will sell playmaker Luka Modric, stressing that the Croatian is not for sale.

Modric has been linked with a £25 million move to Manchester United following a successful campaign with Spurs, helping them qualify for the Champions League.

Redknapp is looking to challenge at the top of the Premier league and in Europe next term, and is therefore not interested in allowing one of his most influential players to depart White Hart Lane this summer.

He said in The Sun: “There’s no chance of it happening at all. Luka’s key to everything that’s happening at this place.

“Everybody knows what I think of him. And if you want to move on to higher levels you don’t start flogging off your best players – to anyone.

“I have an excellent squad and – I stress – Luka Modric is going to remain a part of it.”

Redknapp is determined not to lose another of his stars to United following the departures of Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov to the Red Devils in recent seasons.

It has been suggested that Spurs are also interested in Manchester City’s Stephen Ireland and Bolton defender Gary Cahill, but Redknapp denied the reports.

The club has also been linked with a move for Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies after Martin O’Neill claimed he is open to talks over the 25-year-olds future.

Possible Summer Targets

With the summer here and the champions league looming Tottenham have been linked with a host of players, the difference this summer is that they are actually big name players due to the 4th placed finish.

Now me personally I would love to get in Joe Cole on a free as it would be a great deal for us, with the likes of Jenas, dos santos, O’hara and Bentley likely to leave from our midfield we need to replace it with quality and Cole fits the bill. We also keep getting linked with Micah Richards who I also believe would be a great signing due to his young age and ability to play centre back or right back. Up front the best striker that has been linked with a move to the lane is probably dzeko, could he handle the premiership if he were to come? although something tells me harry still has his sneaky eye on bringing back Berbatov.

There are more names to reel off but with 4th place and champions league football to offer next season it will surely be our most exciting summer to date.
